Trading Quality for Size Lossy compression reduces data size by permanently discarding information judged less important. Unlike lossless methods, the original data cannot be perfectly reconstructed. In exchange, lossy methods often achieve much smaller files. JPEG images, MP3 audio, and most streaming video use lossy compression. Why Discard Data? Human senses do not notice everything. The human eye is less sensitive to subtle color differences than to brightness, and the ear cannot hear some quiet sounds masked by louder ones. Lossy compression exploits these limits, throwing away detail people are unlikely to miss while keeping the overall experience similar. A Simplified Example Imagine compressing a list of brightness values by rounding each to the nearest multiple of 10. Many distinct values collapse to the same number, so the data becomes more repetitive and easier to store, but the exact originals are lost forever. A value of 47 becomes 50; 12 becomes 10. You cannot recover whether 50 came from 47, 48, or 52, which is exactly why this is lossy.
